Starting next month, don’t be surprised if your favorite local TV shows are suddenly missing regular characters in the story. A new ruling issued by the COMELEC states that stars who have plans of running in the May 2010 elections cannot be seen regularly on TV, effective immediately and not at year’s end, as speculated. The computerization of elections was used as a factor in this decision, although we are not sure where the connection lies.
This is bad news for shows that have stars who are intending to run for office; it’s particularly worse for continuing dramas with storylines to consider.
Richard Gomez might have to take a leave of absence from the recently-opened second season of Family Feud, as he is running for a seat in Congress as representative of Ormoc.
Ditto for Lani Mercado, who has to prematurely leave Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit to run as representative of Bacoor.
Ara Mina will also take a compulsory leave from Tinik Sa Dibdib, just like Alfred Vargas from Darna, as both are running for councilor in Quezon City.
Good thing Angelika dela Cruz decided to wait until the next elections; otherwise, she will also leave Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit, just like her “mother” in the soap, Lani, leaving Iza Calzado’s role “orphaned.”
We now wonder if the ruling will also apply to movies, considering that two of the entries to the film festival this December feature stars who are running for different seats, most prominently Senator Bong Revilla, Jr. who stars in Panday.
