PBB's Melai Cantiveros: The Confident Comedienne

Pinoy Big Brother Double Up's final housemate, Melissa "Melai" Cantiveros, is famous for her 100-words-a-minute motormouth, infectious sense of humor, and no-nonsense attitude about her newfound fame and how fleeting it could be. Cosmo talks to the newly minted star and Fun, Fearless Female 2010 awardee about her new showbiz life and everything she loves and hates about it.

Ano 'yung feeling ng kilala ka na sa buong Pilipinas?

Ang feeling? Sobrang happy talaga ang feeling na sa buong Pilipinas kilala ako, kahit pumunta ako sa Baguio, kahit saan ako pumunta, kahit pumunta ako sa Batangas, parang, "Hoy, Melai!" 'Di ko in-expect na kilala ako. Parang ang tagal naming nagsama ng mga tao. Sobrang happy ng feeling at sobrang overwhelming.

What do you like most about being famous? Ano ang pinakagusto mo?

Ang gusto ko? Ang pinakagusto ko sa pagiging sikat is love na love ka ng lahat ng tao. Gusto ka nilang naka-smile na lang. Parang gusto nilang ibigay lahat sa 'yo. Ang mahirap talaga sa pagiging sikat is 'yung hindi ka na makapaglakad sa kalsada nang maayos. Sana makapaglakad ka naman kahit isang beses lang na walang "WAAAAH!" gumaganon. Doon ka na sa kwarto mo 'pag gusto mo ng tahimik.

You now have your own shows, right? What's the most difficult thing about being an artista?

Ang pinakamahirap sa akin 'yung acting. 'Yung mag-acting, mag-drama. Dapat daw natural. E hindi natural sa 'kin. Sobrang nahirapan ako mag-drama!

Is showbiz really what you've always wanted in life?

Showbiz? Hindi ko talaga gusto ang showbiz. Siguro dadaaan lang 'yan sa isip ko, na gusto ko talaga maging showbiz, pero ang gusto ko talaga is teacher. 50% teacher, 50% showbiz na lang, para patas ang laban, 'di ba?

Kung sakaling magsawa ka sa showbiz, do you still want to be a teacher?

Gusto kong ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral, para kung magkaroon ako ng anak, hindi "Uy, si Mommy, walang pinag-graduweytan!" 'di ba? Gusto ko magtapos. 'Pag malaos na, mag-aaral na ako.

You're known for being frank. Where did you get that aspect of your personality?

Hindi ko alam. Ganyan po talaga kami sa bahay. Hindi naman siguro prangka, hindi ko sinasabi kung may kulangot ang kausap ko! (laughs)

You said you are part of a women's group in Gen San. What's your advocacy?

Advocacy? 'Yung kabataan, instead na mag-drugs o mag-rugby, mag-sports na lang tayo. Basketball. Walang masama sa
sports, healthy pa tayo. At saka doon din kami sa aming lugar nag-focus. Pagkatapos sa lugar namin, doon naman sa kabilang barangay.

How do you think you serve as an inspiration for women and Pinoys in general?

Siguro inspirasyon nila ako dahil galing ako sa Gen San. Joke lang! Hindi naman ako masyadong maganda pero dumating ako sa point na ganito. Parang, wow! Ang ganda-ganda ko na ngayon! Kaya siguro na-inspire sila sa 'kin kasi pwede rin sila gumanda. Okay? Pwede rin kayo gumanda katulad ko. Mag-makeup lang kayo!

23. She is just a natural. Naturally funny, naturally witty and naturally kind. At this time, it's kind of hard to find someone who is as genuine as Melai. Good thing PBB found her, and PBB is lucky to have her.
