On Friday, September 2, an explosion wrought havoc on a popular night market on Roxas Avenue, Davao City. It left 14 people dead and more than 60 others injured.

Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio immediately issued a statement extending her condolences to the families of those who died in the night explosion. "I would also like to reassure all of them, as well as the families of those who are injured, that the City Government of Davao will assist in all their needs for hospitalization, burial, funeral and day to day expenses. I am sorry for what happened," she said.

Duterte-Carpio added, "We will not be terrorized by this heinous crime and I call on all Dabawenyos to unite and let us help each other rise from this senseless incident. Let us remain vigilant. Please report any and all suspicious activity, no matter how insignificant it may seem."

The mayor also announced that they will be holding a memorial ceremony at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, at the blast site. "Everybody is welcome to say their prayers, lay flowers, and light a candle for those who passed," she said.

Meanwhile, an ABS-CBN News report revealed that the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) claimed responsibility for the blast. ASG spokesperson Abu Rami reportedly said that the Davao City attack serves as their "call for unity to all mujahideen in the country amid the all-out offensive of the military against the group."

Rami warned that "similar attacks should be expected in the coming days."
