Actress Jodi Sta. Maria, 34, revealed that she turned to alcohol and drugs when her marriage to Pampi Lacson, the son of Senator Ping Lacson, ended.
"Jodi shared her story at the Perfect Love Conference held last October at the Convention Hall of J Centre Mall in Mandaue City, Cebu," reports Cebu Daily News.
In hindsight, Jodi says their immaturity caused their marriage to fail. "Instead of bringing out the best in each other, [marriage] brought out the worst in us," she explained.
Recalling the tumultuous time in her personal life, Jodi said, "My life was such a mess na hindi ko alam kung saan ako magsisimula. [Naisip ko] wala nang magmamahal sa akin kasi separada na ako, segunda mano." ("My life was such a mess that I didn't know where to start again. I thought nobody else would love me because I was separated from someone, like used goods.")
"Before becoming a workaholic, I became an alcoholic," she confessed. "I drank day and night. I even drank during tapings. When alcohol wasn't enough, I turned to drugs. I felt empty. I pretended to be okay when the truth is hindi naman talaga (I really wasn't). I was in and out of bad relationships that left me all the more wounded and broken."
In 2010, actress Connie Reyes invited Jodi to attend church, but it was only in 2014 that she agreed to go with her.
Jodi attests that her faith helped her quit her vices. She said, "I have a newfound respect for my body now, and I have to take care of it."
