Johnny Depp has ended 2016 on another low note after he was named and shamed as the most overpaid actor in Hollywood for a second consecutive year.

Fresh off his bitter divorce from actress Amber Heard, the Pirates of the Caribbean star has topped the annual Forbes poll, thanks to the lackluster returns from his most recent releases, including the blockbuster Alice Through the Looking Glass.

The James Bobbin fantasy, a sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland, made just shy of $300 million at the global box office, but had a sky-high budget of $190 million.

Experts combined those numbers with the figures from two of Johnny's other most recent movies and determined he returned just $2.80 at the box office for every $1 he was paid, earning him first place on the list.

It's bad news for Johnny, who also topped the 2015 countdown after starring in film flops like Transcendence and Mortdecai.

Will Smith claims the number two spot with a $5 return on every $1 he received in salary, after failing to excite movie-goers with his real-life sporting drama Concussion and crime film Focus.

Channing Tatum is a surprise entry at three with $6 made for ever $1 paid. Despite the huge success of his Magic Mike sequel, Magic Mike XXL, his returns were diminished by the poor performance of sci-fi release Jupiter Ascending, which grossed a total of $183.9 million, just about covering its budget of $176 million.

The Forbes top five is rounded out by comedian Will Ferrell at four and George Clooney at five, after moderate takings for his movies Hail, Caesar!, Money Monster, and Tomorrowland
