Selena Gomez revealed on Thursday that she had a kidney transplant. "I'm very aware some of my fans noticed I was laying low for part of the summer," she wrote on Instagram. "I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and I was recovering." She thanked her doctors, family, and her friend, actress Francia Raisa (pictured), who donated her kidney. "She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me," Selena said. "I am incredibly blessed." Here is the full message:

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. Francia hasn't shared a statement of her own at this point, but here's a birthday message she posted for Selena, calling her a "forever friend," in July.

Selena revealed her Lupus diagnosis in 2015. The following year, she announced she was taking time off due to side-effects from the autoimmune disease. "As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," she told People. "I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks, and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges." She's since been vocal about focusing on her mental and physical health.
