A New Zealand tourist was so frightened of an Australian man she met through Tinder that she fell from his 14th floor balcony when she tried to flee his apartment, a prosecutor told an Australian court on Monday.

Six days after finding Gable Tostee on the dating app, 26-year-old Warriena Wright went back to his apartment on the first night she met up with him at Brisbane beach spot Surfers Paradise, The Telegraph reports.

Tostee allegedly strangled Wright and was recorded saying he would "chuck her" from his balcony, before she attempted to escape and fell to her death.

The audio recording of the altercation, which took place in February 2014, was played in Brisbane's Supreme Court.

"You're lucky I haven't chucked you off my balcony you God damn psycho bitch," Tostee could be heard saying to Wright. "You're not going to collect any belongings, you're just going to walk out."

Tostee, who has pleaded not guilty and denied strangling Ms Wright, was also heard threatening to "knock out" Wright, who is said to have asked to leave several times during the incident.

The prosecution acknowledged the pair had been drinking and said they were not claiming Tostee had pushed Wright from the balcony, but that his threats left her with no choice but to try to and climb out of his apartment.

The court was told a neighbour, who was alerted by noise from the apartment above, witnessed Wright's fall from the balcony.

"Legs came down and dangled in the air," she said.

The court case will continue this week.
