Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover!
Posted on March 9, 2011 12:00 am

It's easy to pass judgment anytime, anywhere. We do it too often; it's become a habit. In fact, we hardly notice that we regularly label other people or things with some supposedly harmless hirits. Think back to the time when you tagged something "chaka," just because. Or, the moment when you banded with the office mean girls to mercilessly bad-mouth someone's working style or fashion sense. Or, that instance when you dissed someone's habits simply because you found them bizarre. We're all guilty. Aminin!
The Power Of Opinion
I think it has something to do with our need to be heard. In this day and age when freedom is fought for and celebrated, our opinions give us power. With them, we can gather a group of allies or make frenemies, build or destroy reputations, and ease or provoke inner rages. To some, mean hirits make them look cool (to whom? Mostly to their impressionistic audience, that is). To others, their opinions are their ways to help, reach out, and offer feedback for improvement.
The Power Of A Cosmo Cover
In our world where our magazine-stand appeal is reliant on a good cover, 'buti na lang we're Cosmo! No, that doesn't exempt us from any bad rap or critical judges; just like any other mag out there, we get our fair share of criticism—regardless of whom we put on the cover. But because we're Cosmo, we're confident that there's so much more that we can offer. We look at our cover girls from a reader's viewpoint and examine her humanity—yes, dear readers, she gets her heart broken, she cries, she makes funny faces, she's scared, she's confident.
Over the years, that's something I've grown to appreciate with Cosmo: the fact that we recognize that the Cosmo cover girls are much like you and me. Their pains are familiar, their joys recognizable. They savor the same triumphs and make similar mistakes. Some get smitten with the wrong men (now, we've all been there and done that, right?), others are lucky enough to find the love of their lives (don't we all wish the same?). And, these lovely ladies on the Cosmo cover can all easily be victims of unmerited judgment—much like you and me.
The Power Of A True Cosmo Chick
So, going back to judging a book by its cover: We accept that that's a part of magazine publishing life (thus, our fabulous shots, great makeup, and awesome styling). Judging the gorgeous girls on our cover? Well, even that is a part of life, too, especially since these fearless women brave the spotlight for a living. But, as in magazines, people, and life, the true Cosmo chick is the one that sees beyond a first impression—whether good or bad—and seeks to find out more of what anything, any situation, or anyone has to offer.
Given that, I stand by my case, 'buti na lang we're Cosmo. Because, really, as far as offerings go, we really trump everyone else.
Cosmopolitan is the most widely-read female magazine in the Philippines and in the world. It’s a COMPLETE read with everything from fashion and beauty, to lifestyle, self-improvement, relationships, career, and health. (Oh yeah, and we have lots of eye candy, too!)

1. That was so true... I just wanted to share something through this. I was really inspired by you Ms. Zo. As I was reading your Letter from the Editor from this month's issue, I realized a lot of things. Like trying hard to fit in and be as gorgeous as what we see from people on magazine's or TV, little that we see that being happy and contented on our own skin is something we should have, in the first place to feel truly beautiful. Now I've been exercising self confidence and a little of positive thinking, as I walk everywhere. I know in myself that there's nothing much wrong with how I look or how I dress, for this is me, and this is what makes me feel comfortable and "HOT". Also just like what you said on your letter, I keep thinking to myself and sincerely believe that I am hot... I am so hot! Am also starting to see that people are starting to see that. Thanks a lot Ms. Zo, you are really, definitely, a fun fearless cosmo gal.
