My hair booboos and I, we go a long way back. When I was six, I dared to give myself bangs. I fished a pair of scissors (yes, the mapurol ones) out of my bag and snipped away. I got my bangs, all right, but they were uneven and super short they hung midway across my forehead. My mom tried to save my hair, but there was little she could do. I looked like a schoolgirl sporting a really bad and awkward wig.
When Ghost came out, my mom, a big fan of the movie, found the perfect reason to change my looks. She gave me a Demi Moore boycut which I absolutely loathed. I cried my 7-year-old heart out, seeing my beautiful hair on the floor.
Fast forward to high school, aka the time when my hair decided to assert its independence and started thinking on its own: My bestfriend applied hair straightening on my locks, thinking it would give my hair order and a sense of normalcy. The treatment was a huge disaster; my hair looked more outrageously buhaghag than it had ever been. Two teachers even asked me, "Nagpakulot ka ba?"
(I ended up sporting stiff hair the entire duration of high school. My hair had an uncanny resemblance to a pyramid.)
In college, I discovered a new best friend: the salon. I had my hair relaxed, hot-oiled, cellophaned. When I started working, I saved up and had my hair rebonded. I saw a dramatic transformation in my hair for the very first time.
But in between good hair days and VBHD (very bad hair days) I just tied my hair in a ponytail. It was just convenient, so stress-free.
So, it's just my luck that I'm now working in Cosmo. Makeover galore! Nic, the beauty editor, suggested that I cut my hair short, Katie Holmes-bob style. I also had my hair colored for the first time. I was introduced to the concept of side-swept bangs. I learned so much about hair products and discovered beauty secrets: Do you know that applying serum mixed with styling paste could tame your hair? I've also become a big fan of the hair-straightening iron.
Just recently I availed of another get-gorgeous hair service, Basement Salon's Permanent Blow Dry. When I stepped out of that salon, I just felt so confident and glam. And I realized, that's what having manageable hair does to me. It makes me feel that I can take on any challenge and survive daily mishaps. It gives me this additional oomph. It's my pick-me-upper, my instant prettifier. Sometimes my stubborn mane exercises its right to declare war against me, but I know that I'm not completely powerless. A quick blow dry, a drop of serum, a dash of confidence, and voila! I'm good to go.
