Hello, Goodbye

Posted on February 6, 2010 12:00 pm by Cereb Gregorio, Editorial Assistant

cereb_bash.jpgIf the only thing constant in life is change, then I look to the coming year with both fear and excitement. I’ve never been a big fan of change. Its unexpectedness is always unsettling, and it takes me a while to wrap my head around the idea of adjusting to new ways. Last month's issue on Fabulous Firsts has made me realize even more that change will always happen, and we need to embrace it, if only for the simple reason that it makes life more interesting.

When I started working for Cosmo, I had unruly, frizzy hair. I’ve had it all my life, so I’ve learned to see it as something that sets me apart from other girls. Of course, our beloved Beauty Editor, Nicole Delos Angeles, thought otherwise. For months on end, she practically lobbied to give me a makeover, or at the very least, have my hair straightened. Now, this wisp of a woman is truly a force to be reckoned with. She eventually got her way, and I ended up with straight hair—a fabulous first that I grew to love and thank her for.

The beginning of the year has ushered in a lot of changes as well. Three of the most fun, fearless, fabulous females I’ve ever met have decided to pursue dreams they have yet to pursue, and make way for more welcome changes in their own lives. Our former Fashion Editor Kat is now in New York, Beauty Editor Nic will have more time for family life, and Editorial Assistant for Art Beam will be able to focus on her crafts business. Although I’m sad that I will no longer be seeing them everyday, I am also comforted by the fact that all these changes are for the better. At the end of the day, our loss is their gain, and I can only be genuinely happy for them.

To Katreenuh, your unwavering optimism and perseverance is an inspiration to all those you encounter.
Thank you for paving the way for me in this industry, for doling out the best advice, and for forcing me to do things I don’t want to do because they’re good for me. I have nothing but high hopes for you, and I wish you’d never cry again. You are sorely missed.

To Nicolette, you’re quite possibly the nicest mean girl ever. Thank you for showing me genuine concern in the only way you know how—teasing and bullying (or constructive criticism, whichever you prefer). You’re fun and funny, and I am blessed that I got to know you and work with you, no matter how short that time was. In spite of everything, you truly have a good heart. The aisle just isn’t the same without you. I can actually get some work done now. Haha.

To Beamerz, it still feels weird when I look across my desk, and I don’t find you.
I’ve always been a big fan of your art (even if I mock your little crafts projects sometimes) and your ability to see the good in people. I hate the fact that nobody will readily offer me help anymore, like you do when you hear me sighing. With your crafty hands and the way you work, I am confident that you will succeed. I wish I had the money to fund you, so I can be a part of that success.

Even if it meant turning their lives upside-down, these girls all had the courage to take a leap and pursue their dreams, and that is truly admirable. I hope we can all arm ourselves with the same courage in the year ahead.
