Surviving Scary Sitches
Posted on April 15, 2011 12:00 am

In the article "How To Handle 5 Very Scary Sitches" appearing in this month's issue, I talked about my MRT incident: how the train broke down and the passengers inside—me included—got all panicky, how smoke started to fill the car and people started to push themselves forward so they could jump off the train. Imagine that! Jumping off the train! It wasn't a pretty experience, to say the least, but I'm glad I got out of the train alive.
Indeed, it was a very scary situation, one that had me thinking that we can never be too sure about our safety these days. There I was, humming my favorite song one minute then praying for my survival and safety the next. Who knew, right? This mishap made me look back at the other scary sitches I've found myself in... and the two important lessons I gleaned from them. Learn from me, Cosmo girls—it pays to be careful and vigilant all the time.
1. Stay calm.
Don't panic. I got stuck in an elevator once, and staying there for a good 30 minutes with 12 or more people wasn't exactly assuring. To make matters worse, one of the passengers started jumping up and down in the elevator, out of panic, out of desperation to get out of there. We had to calm him down because he was only putting us in a more precarious situation! See? Staying calm in a crazy/chaotic situation like this one is crucial. Easier said than done, but really, staying calm and composed allows you to think more clearly for your safety.
2. Be mindful of your safety.
One Saturday afternoon, my friend and I were walking along a busy street. I was loosely carrying my bag—I felt pretty safe in that neighborhood and didn't feel the need to be vigilant and hold on to my belongings for dear life. Alas, that was a wrong move because out of nowhere, a motorcyclist swooped in and snached my bag! My bag had everything: my iPod, my money, my makeup kit, and two mobile phones. Needless to say, that was a very depressing day. But, I learned my lesson all right: to be attentive and mindful of my belongings—and safety—at all times.
How about you girls? Do you have any scary sitch to share? For more helpful tips on how to survive dangerous incidents like a stampede or burglar attack, look for the article "How To Handle 5 Very Scary Sitches" in this month's issue of Cosmo. It's a lifesaver, I tell you.
