Jasmine Curtis-Smith currently stars alongside Louise Delos Reyes in the film Baka Bukas. The buzz around the film came about from the lesbian love story shared by the two female leads: Alex (played by Jasmine) unexpectedly falls in love with her best friend Jess (played by Louise).
With a love story comes, well, showing that love on-screen. In Baka Bukas' case, Jasmine and Louise did an on-screen kiss (sorry for the spoiler)—something that isn't quite the norm in Philippine cinema or in Philippine society at all.
In a report by PEP.ph, Jasmine talked about her experience playing a lesbian and the social responsibility that comes along with it.
"Sabi nga sa isang documentary na napanood ko, 'You can't be, what you can't see.' Maraming tao na they feel that they're different pero hindi nila completely ma-fulfill 'yung pagkatao nila because wala silang [nakikitang] tao na comfortable enough to be out and proud of who they are completely.
"Importante na mabuksan natin ang isipan ng mga tao by doing this [film]. It's important for younger generations to feel accepted, to grow up in a community [where] they can feel comfortable with who they are."
Surprisingly though, the kiss Jasmine shared with Louise is her first on-screen kiss ever. She agreed to do so for this particular movie for a bigger purpose: to make people aware that romantic love shared by two women is, in fact, real and beautiful.
"I think kasi kailangan maging open-minded ang maraming tao. Sobrang okay lang sa maraming tao na kapag bata ka pa, okay lang ang mga lalaki at babae maghalikan. Pero kapag nakita babae sa babae, ang daming nagsasabi, 'Ang laswa naman niyan. Ang pangit niyan.' No! Bakit tayo ganun? Hindi dapat ganun. Love is love. There is no boundary when it comes to gender. Bakit natin huhusgahan iyon? I wanted to be part of that type of movement to make people more open-minded and aware."
Baka Bukas is directed by Samantha Lee and is currently shown in cinemas nationwide.
