The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) are investigating the case of Kiane Shannon Sophie Cañares—the 21-year-old single mother and student of the University of San Carlos who took her own life in front of her three-year-old daughter.

"The incident happened on July 3 at their home in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City. At that time, Cañares also had an added audience, as she had logged on to Facebook Live," reports SunStar Cebu.

The report noted: "CCPO Chief Joel Doria said that the investigation aims to determine if Kiane Shannon Sophie Cañares had a traumatic experience before she committed suicide. Doria said that the family requested time and privacy and that they will issue a statement once the victim is laid to rest."

Doria was quoted as saying, "This is a sensitive case. That's why we are handling this carefully but the truth will come out." He added, "Our investigators are collecting information from friends and relatives who can help us [find out] why she took her own life and [why] she even [livestreamed it via Facebook Live]."

The footage of Cañares' final moments has been taken down from Facebook.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rene Obra, chief of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) Center for Behavioral Sciences, shared that according to Cañares' family, she had attempted to take her own life twice before. "That means that she was high risk," he said.

Suicide is a mental health issue. Those who feel they are at risk or know someone who is, must seek professional help ASAP.
