Porn Sites In The Philippines Are NOT Blocked; We Checked!

Ladies and gentlemen, we've been checking the sites for hours and we're exhausted.

On Saturday, January 14, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that the "Philippine government has blocked Internet users from accessing adult websites."

The report noted: "As of Saturday, access to known porn sites such as PornHub.com and XVideos.com had been forbidden, either through mobile phones or laptops. Users were redirected to a page notifying them of such a ban."

The notice supposedly read: "This website has been ordered blocked under authority of the Philippine government pursuant to Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Law."

In an effort to verify the report, we checked the porn sites mentioned in the Inquirer report as well as other similar sites.

To our surprise, we easily accessed the adult websites. There is absolutely no child porn in them, although there are a lot of role-playing videos where older women are dressed to look younger.

It may be recalled that during President Noynoy Aquino's term in 2014, the National Telecommunications Commission issued a memorandum ordering Internet service providers to ban the access to pornographic sites to accord with Republic Act No. 9775 that lists child pornography as a criminal act. But, as we pointed out, popular adult sites do not feature children.

It's also worth noting that according to PornHub, last year users from the Philippines stayed on their page the longest—12 minutes and 45 seconds.

GMA News recalled that the Philippines also held the top spot in the same PornHub category in 2015, clocking in at nine minutes and 36 seconds on the site.

Meanwhile, there's a Reddit thread on the subject of the supposed ban of porn sites in the Philippines. Users from the Philippines confirmed that they were able to access the sites. One of them related, "I'm from the Philippines. When I saw this, I instantly checked several porn sites. Nah....[They weren't] blocked." Another said, "What a BS story. I just visited all the sites you can think of and I am not blocked."

Of course, Reddit user Jiv Turky deserves special mention for writing, "I've been testing my porn access for three hours and I'm exhausted." This was the comment that inspired us to stay focused on checking the sites from Saturday afternoon, January 14 to Sunday, January 15 (and up until posting this article). Like we said, we could easily access all the adult sites we could think of and we're now exhausted from our noble mission.

There are people who say that some Internet service providers are cutting off access to porn sites especially on low bandwidth allocation prepaid long-term evolution (LTE) accounts. So, will somebody with a low bandwidth allocation prepaid LTE account care to confirm or disprove this? Come on. You're doing this in the name of citizen journalism (or whatever it's called).
