On Thursday, October 6, after President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his speech before policemen in Camp Rafael Rodriguez in Butuan City, a police officer came forward to do something totally unexpected.
"Police Senior Inspector Arvin Jusmillo asked for a few minutes from the President to propose to his girlfriend, Police Senior Inspector Romea Alnieza Kinang, who happens to be Duterte's aide-de-camp," reports Nestor Corrales in Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Kinang was up on stage with Duterte when Jusmillo, who was carrying a bouquet of flowers, delivered his proposal spiel.
Jusmillo began, "My beloved President...sir. Humihiling po ako ng tatlong minuto lang po sa ngalan ng pag-ibig, sir. I would like to take this... I would like to grab this very rare opportunity and perfect timing, sir."
("My beloved President...sir. I ask for three minutes in the name of love, sir. I would like to take this... I would like to grab this very rare opportunity and perfect timing, sir.")
Jusmillo revealed that he and Kinang had been in a relationship for five years and 10 months.
Jusmillo, who was holding a bouquet of flowers, shared their love story, including how they had briefly broken up. In fact, they postponed their initial plan to tie the knot last month.
Jusmillo went on to say, "Ganun pa man, sir, I’m thankful na talagang everything happens for a reason. Had it happened na kinasal tayo, hindi mangyayari ito na makapag-propose ako sa ‘yo before the President of the Republic and the viewing public throughout the world."
("In any case, sir, I’m thankful that everything really happens for a reason. Had it happened that we got married, I won't be able to propose to you before the President of the Republic and the viewing public throughout the world.")
Jusmillo then sealed the proposal by saying, "Romea Alnieza Kinang, when you left me, I realized na for the past five years and 10 months na we’ve been together... Na-realize ko na marami akong pagkukulang as your boyfriend. But don’t you worry, pakasalan mo lang ako, I [will] still have forever para bumawi as your husband."
("Romea Alnieza Kinang, when you left me, I realized that for the past five years and 10 months that we’ve been together... I realized that I missed out on a lot of things as your boyfriend. But don’t you worry, just marry me, and then I'll still have forever to make up for it as your husband.")
Jusmillo then went up onstage and handed Kinang the bouquet of roses. He gave her an engagement ring and kissed her on the cheek. Duterte was seen clapping while everyone else cheered for the newly engaged couple.
Jusmillo and Kinang later posed for a photo with Duterte.
