A study published in the British Journal of Psychology has found that selfless people are more desirable to the opposite sex, have more sexual partners, and engage in sex more frequently. In other words, they pretty much have the ideal sex life.

The research was conducted by the Canada-based University of Guelph and Nipissing University.

"The researchers interviewed about 800 people (aged 18 and older) regarding their relationships and propensity for helping others, including giving to charity, donating blood, helping strangers cross the street, donating winnings, and helping classmates," reports Science Daily.

The study notes, though, "that while altruism is a desirable quality [in] both genders, it affects men's lifetime dating and sex partners more than women's."

"Male altruists have higher mating success than non-altruists, whereas female altruists don't benefit quite as much," according to Dr. Pat Barclay, associate professor of psychology at the University of Guelph.

Barclay gives one possible reason for the varying degrees of reception on male and female altruists. He explains, "On average, women typically need to worry more than men do about lack of commitment, or him being a bad parent, or being violent."

This means more women are diligent in looking for cues that a potential partner is "decent," since they surmise that "someone who is altruistic now is less likely to act like a jerk later." They purposely seek out the good guys.
