Senator Risa Hontiveros has come to the defense of her colleague and called President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent remarks against Senator Leila de Lima “misogynistic.”
In a statement on Thursday, the senator cried foul over the president’s earlier remarks saying that De Lima was having a love affair with her driver, who was also allegedly involved in drug money.
“As a woman, I take deep offense at President Rodrigo Duterte's latest remarks against fellow Senator Leila de Lima. They are misogynistic.”
Hontiveros also said the president’s remarks were “an awful display of ‘ad hominem politics.’”
“President Duterte gave premium to personal attacks over real arguments, and appealed to prejudices rather than discourse... Moreover, the remarks were extremely unpresidential and a breach of parliamentary courtesy,” she said.
“President Duterte cannot continue making injudicious statements. I again remind him, being the highest leader of the land, his public political statements have the force and effect of policy,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Inquirer reported that Vice President Leni Robredo expressed sadness over the issue.
“Puwede naman na nag-disagree tayo on issues pero sa diskusyon… kailangang pakinggan natin ang bawa't isa. Magrespetuhan,” she said.
De Lima and Robredo are both part of the Liberal Party (LP) while Hontiveros is a member of the Akbayan Partylist which is in alliance with the LP.
