Every woman knows that public transit can be a scary place—and that's evidently very true in Mexico City.

BuzzFeed reports that 2014 surveys found that Mexico's capital city is the worst place for verbal and physical harassment on public transit worldwide.

In response, the city has launched the #NoEsDeHombres campaign to teach men the discomfort of being a woman on public transit. The effort includes PENIS SEATS on the subway, which were designed "exclusively for men," and aim to show men what it's like to be uncomfortable in a shared space.

The sign under the seat reads: "It is uncomfortable to sit here, but that is nothing compared to the sexual violence that women suffer on their daily journeys."

"What we were looking for was to generate empathy from men, based on what women live with daily in the public transport,” said Ana Güezmes, a representative at UN Women. (The project is part of their Safe Cities and Public Spaces for Women and Girls initiative, which is taking place in 25 cities throughout the world.)

She added that the campaign is a "message to all men who violate and control women, or consider that saying inappropriate things to women is part of their manhood."

Some say the campaign is powerful and moving, while others question if asking men to sit on a fake penis will provoke any real change.
