The Economist recently released a list of expensive countries to live in, and to no one's surprise, Singapore topped the list for the fourth consecutive year. This finding is based on a survey comparing the prices of 160 goods and services from 133 countries.

Singapore is reportedly five percent more expensive than Hong Kong, which came in second place, and 20 percent pricier than New York City.

According to the Straits Times, the one thing that sets Singapore apart is the cost of owning a car. For example, a Volkswagen Golf sells for a little over $90,000 (P4,515,300) in Singapore; but it retails for only $20,000 (P1,003,400)  in the U.S.

Writer Mimi Ho explained, "It keeps the roads fairly clear for such a small island—Singapore is slightly larger than three and a half Washington, D.C.s—and helps keep it one of the greenest, if not the greenest, urban areas in Asia. This system means that only about 15 percent of Singaporeans own a car."
