Our web producer, David, is currently taking up his Masters in Film at UP Diliman. One of the classes he signed up for this semester is entitled Skinema: Film Pornography, because he's curious like that. In other words, it's a class on porn.

After he told us and once the laughter subsided, we were all intrigued. We all wanted to sit in and find out about porn from an academic perspective. In the interest of learning, I asked to see David's syllabus and found that the class was described as a study on how feminist views on porn have changed through time. I'm guessing it means that what was once frowned upon and seen as an instrument for the degradation of women can now be presented in an entirely different light.

About a week ago, I found a Discovery Health DVD called Sexual Secrets. It had numerous episodes discussing topics on human sexuality. One of the episodes was on porn and other forms of adult entertainment, and it featured a lady named Candida Royalle. She starred in some adult films, and now, she directs her own with a female audience in mind. When asked why she thought women liked her movies, she said "I try to give my movies a sense of reality without compromising the heat--a sense of compassion, sensuality, mutual pleasure, real people in real situations."

I searched for snippets of Candida Royalle's movies on YouTube, and I found a video detailing the process instead. It also showed some (relatively tame) scenes from a couple of her movies. From these tidbits, the difference between the usual porn and femme porn is pretty clear.

In femme porn, women are depicted as objects of desire rather than merely a means for a guy to get off. They are slowly seduced and romanced into having sex with sincerity and smart conversation. None of the scenes that I saw showed people having sex, but the build-up was already enough of a turn-on. It just proves that women are sexual creatures in their own right.

My views on porn have changed with this new discovery. I still can't say whether it's right or wrong, but I understand how it has helped women in some way. Gone are the days when sensuality in women is frowned upon. Now, we're free to embrace what comes naturally and to enjoy it as much as men do.
