Ana's Birthday Party

Sure enough, Sam did throw a party for Ana. It happened on a Friday, after work hours. When my agency friends and I arrived at the restaurant, it was filled with women in matching outfits and middle-aged, semi-bald, bulging men in identical polo barongs.

"We are overdressed," Jai whispered to me. "Prayer meeting pala ito."

Of course Jai was overdressed. He's always overdressed. But sure enough, his trademark leather pants, shiny purple top, and pointed black shoes looked twice as gay in the super straight, super boring, super intellectual, uniformed mob.

Of course, I was dressed for the party. Well, I was thinking it would be like my regularization party—lots of food, booze, and music. So I wore a mini cocktail dress and heels. But when we arrived, it felt oddly like a buffet at some ordinary hotel. And my God, Sam was serving iced tea...at seven-freaking-o'clock in the evening!

"Wala bang beer?" Franco asked.

"Wala e," Nino said as he walked past our table and gave me the "I'd rather not be here" look.

From our table, I saw Sam and Ana doing the rounds and greeting the guests. I walked over to give Ana my gift—a bottle of champagne, ironically. Sam was wearing his usual shirt and pants get-up, and Ana was wearing a pink tent.

"Happy birthday, Ana," I greeted and gave her the package.

"Thank you, Veronica," she said. "You look nice."

I know, right? I thought.

"Thanks," I said. "The guys are over there, by the way. You haven't met my friends from the agency, right?"

"Ah, hindi pa," Ana said.

"'Lika, pakikilala kita," Sam said, then he held Ana's hand and walked toward the table.

I could only hear Jai's evil brain in action as I walked toward the bar and asked Nino for a secret serving of vodka for our table. The restaurant was packed with middle-aged, simple-looking people. It was the first time I felt like a stranger here. Obviously, everyone had already met the charming chef but not his "female" roommate. I'd bet the group of younger girls seated near the bar were Ana's confidantes. They were easy to spot, considering the loaded looks they kept firing at me.

Once or twice, I overheard, "Ana, okay lang talaga sa 'yo na may kasamang babae si Sam sa condo niya?" or "'Yan ba 'yung best friend ni Sam na sinasabi mo? E mukha naman palang party girl e," or "Baka agawin niya sa 'yo si Sam!"

"Best friends lang sila," Ana would always say.

It was a good thing my friends from the agency were there. Chi, Aki, and Franco kept me reasonably calm by telling me that of course Ana's friends were shocked because it was the first time they saw me. And Jai kept me feeling a gazillion times prettier as he kept bitching about Ana's tent that failed to hide her bulges. Later that night, I learned that Charlie arrived an hour ahead of us but retreated when she saw the unusual crowd at Sam's restaurant. She thought Ana's birthday party was canceled and that a political party reserved the restaurant instead.

As the party came to an end, and after three rounds of "secret vodka" from Nino, I mellowed down. In fact, a part of me felt relieved that there were still good guys out there like Sam, who would throw a party like this for someone special (even though it was my idea). I just sat at our table and sipped my vodka in silence wishing that someday, somehow, someone would throw a party for me, too. For now, I can only hope.
