Bonding With Sam For The First Time--Over Food, What Else?

patisserie_main.jpgA few days into my first job and I finally had my own group of friends, mostly girls whom I occasionally bump into at the pantry where, mercifully, fresh brewed coffee was free and bottomless. Soon, I had my own lunch group, 3PM-taho-break group, kikay group, and eventually uwian buddies.

Gail, who was the first in my high school barkada to have a taste of the corporate life, told me about this quaint patisserie located somewhere inside the building across our office. One day, I decided to skip the usual 3PM taho break and walked over to the next building to check it out.

And just as Gail promised, they have a decent selection of gourmet sandwiches and pastries. Their bestseller was the decadent Revel Bar that promised two thousand calories and one dentist visit a piece.

I decided to try it anyway. As I was enjoying a piece and a tall glass of lemonade, Sam walked into the patisserie.

He was wearing the same jeans and same sneakers from that “babysitting” night, over which he wore a simple white shirt with the word “Artist” in front. It was funny how he managed to look fresh at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

He bought himself a Revel Bar and sat across from me.

O, kumusta ka na?” he started. “Marunong ka nang umuwi?

Okay din 'to ah, I thought sarcastically.

“Oo, bakit?” I fired back.

“Wala naman, mukha ka pa rin kasing naliligaw.”

He chewed on his Revel Bar.

“Pa'no mo nalaman ‘tong lugar na 'to?” he asked after a while.

“From a friend,” I answered. “Adik siya sa Revel Bars nila e.

“Yeah,” he said. “Kapag hindi mo na-try 'to, you’ll miss half of your life. Loko 'tong si Carl ayaw ituro sa 'kin 'yung recipe e.”

“Kilala mo 'yung may-ari?”

“Yup,” he answered. “Bandmate ko nung college. Actually his aunt owns the place. Ume-epal lang siya sa kitchen. Try mo 'yung chicken sandwich nila minsan. Sarap din.

And that was how we became friends. There were times when we would ditch the usual lunch crowd at Manang’s eatery three blocks away from the office to have sandwiches, revel bars, and truckloads of conversation at this quaint patisserie.
