Caught Kissing By The Barangay Tanod

Thump. Thump.

My heart was racing. My vision was blurred. My hands felt sweaty, clasped in his calloused hands. He wasn’t pretty, nor am I. This was wrong. Then why did I feel like kissing him till my eyes roll out of their sockets?

Thump. Thump.

Even my heart was reacting wildly. Thump. Thump. My head was swirling with carnal thoughts and sweet surrender and…oh my God!

The barangay tanod in a bright yellow ensemble knocked on the window again. Thump. Thump. Then he flashed his emergency light in front of our faces. Matt’s car wasn’t tinted, so despite the heavy downpour, we were caught red-handed. I straightened up and hurried to regain my composure. Matt opened the window.

Bawal dito ‘yan boss…” the barangay tanod started.

“We were just talking...” Matt explained.

“Naguusap? E naghahalikan kayo e! Kitang-kita ko kayo...”

So kanina ka pa pala nanonood gan’on?” Matt, the smart-ass, snorted.

The bulky man snorted. “Magfa-file ako ng report. Sandali lang…”

The moment the man turned to walk to his barangay-issued tricycle, Matt started the car, hit the gas, and raced out of the long side street in reverse.

“Put on your seatbelt!” he nearly shouted.

Stunned, I looked like an idiot who snapped her seatbelt for the first time. From the rearview mirror, two small dots of flashing lights were following us. Matt kicked the car in high gear and raced out of the village in record speed. Man, the jackass could drive!

He didn’t slow down until we reached EDSA. We were nearing Ayala when he said, “Humor me.”

I didn’t know what he wanted. Should I tell a joke? Make faces? Do cartwheels…inside the car? I reached out and touched his hand, the one that was mounted on the gear shifter, and then I started to sing.

“And now the parking lot is empty…everyone’s gone someplace. I picked you up and in the trunk I’ve packed…a cooler and a two-day suitcase…”

I felt him calm down slowly and from the corner of my eyes, I saw him smiling.

“So we’re okay, we’re fine. Baby I’m here to stop your crying. Chase all the ghosts from your head. I’m stronger than the monster beneath your bed.”

We were cruising down EDSA, on that rainy Saturday night, with our hands clasped together on top of the gear shifter. The outside world seemed blurry, maybe it was the rain, maybe we were exceeding the speed limit, and maybe my head was spinning out of control again. Maybe it was all three. I didn’t care. It was the first time I did that for someone.

“Smarter than the tricks played on your heart. We’ll look at them together then we’ll take them apart.”

As fast as he was changing gears, I knew something in me changed as well.

“Adding up a total of a love that’s true…multiply life by the power of two.”
