“Long distance, my ass!” Charlie said. “F*ck him!”

You remember my friend Charlie, right? Charlie, my-favorite-word-is-“f*ck”-so-what Charlie, my larger-than-life college buddy, who recently ended her relationship with her boyfriend Jan.

“Seriously, I don’t believe in long distance relationships,” she continued. “That’s like f*cking a wall!”

I knew her story from start to finish. I knew what she had to endure before finally hooking up with Jan. I heard it in between sips of hot lattes and frappucinos in Starbucks until the wee hours of the morning. I knew how agitated she was when she told me about the perfect night and the perfect confession inside the perfect nipa hut somewhere in perfect Caloocan over the perfect bottles of beer. But I never told her how I felt the perfect “Kawawa naman ako, paano naman kami ni Matt?” moment because I didn’t want to rain on her parade, because I knew how perfectly happy she was that night.

“So nakipag-break ka?” I asked her over the phone.

“Yes!” She said. “Inunahan ko na. At least I get the upper hand.”

“Wow, girl power ha!

“Spice Girls ito, hahaha!” she said with a laugh. “Same boat na tayo. It’s time to hook new ones…”

“Actually…”

“F*CK! Don’t tell me you’re still on Matt-mode?!“ she blared into the phone. “And to think you’re living with a huffing, puffing, hot male chef who can whip up…”

“CHARLIE!” I retorted. “How many times do I have to tell you that Sam and I are just friends? Of all people who…”

Kahit na!” She cut in. “It’s been almost a year Veronica Matilda (surname deleted). Bury Matt. Let it go. He’s exchanging body fluids with his new girlfriend now and is obviously oblivious to the pain he has caused you. Wala bang cute sa bagong office mo?”

“Actually meron,” I answered. “Si Jai, cute ‘yon.” I had to keep myself from laughing.

“Cool! Let’s have dinner sa restaurant ni Sam this week, sama mo si Jai.”

And that’s how Charlie met my new friends at the agency. My evil plan backfired when Charlie and Jai became shopping buddies after learning that they shared the same fondness for scarves. I’ve always thought that Charlie was gay in her previous life; and now Jai found a soul sister in her. Soon, Charlie was helping Jai corner poor Nino at the restaurant, with Charlie working as Jai’s wingman, or wingwoman for that matter, while the rest of the gang sipped Martinis with Sam.

One night, after the now usual dinner at Sam’s restaurant, Charlie elbowed me.

“You know what I think?” she started. “You just need a new challenge to relieve your depression. And boy, have I a challenge for you.”

And that, dear readers, is how the C and V Dating Spree began.
