When my family arrived at around 10 o'clock in the evening, my father was sporting a safe and unyielding facade while my mother went "mother-of-the-bride" on us as we went from one table to the next, introducing them to our friends. We ushered them to the center table, which we reserved for family members. The food and drinks arrived just as my sister's friends requested for some steamed rice to go with the bar's famous "Liempo For The Road." A short while later, Logan pointed to my mother, who sat with my high school friends, talking to Nicia and Gail about how much we all have grown.

When my Mom saw Logan's mother and brother walk into the bar, she stood up to greet them with a hug. Logan and I stood by the bar, watching from a distance how our mothers went from one table to another to greet the guests on their own. We didn't have to do anything else but watch. We were both touched when we saw Logan's sister, Ate Anne, and her boyfriend, Kuya VJ, walk into the bar. It was the first time I'm meeting Logan's sister, and I was overwhelmed that despite everyone's busy schedules, we managed to have everyone attend our crazy drinking party.

The very nice FTR staff kept the booze and the food coming. We were so busy talking to people that we forgot all about the open mic session, which was okay because we forgot to bring a microphone anyway. But in place of the open mic session, we got everyone to take a vodka shot for us, for good luck. And oh boy, I've never tasted vodka smoother than the one JP and Mia gave us that night.

Toward the end of the party, Logan made a short speech about why we decided to have a drinking party.

"Bakit ba tayo nandito ngayon?" he started. "Kasi kami na." And everyone made whooping sounds.

"Sabi ko kasi dati," he continued. "Kapag sinagot niya ako, magpapainom ako. Siyempre ang nasa isip ko noon e inuman sa tindahan lang. Pero dahil marami tayo and friend niya 'yung may-ari, dito tayo sa For the Road. Thank you sa lahat ng friends namin na nagpunta tonight, kina Tito at Tita para sa tarpaulin, kina JP at Mia and sa staff ng For the Road."

When Logan ended his speech with an "I love you," Bim started yelling "Kiss! Kiss!" and everyone followed suit. Logan and I felt a chill run down our spines and back. The sight of my father seated across their table stopped Bim dead on his tracks, but then someone started hitting a glass with a spoon to signal the kiss. When we turned to see who it was, we found that it was my mother, urging everyone to do the same.

And so we shared a stiff smack on the lips as our friends took photos and made more whooping sounds.

We actually exceeded our five-figure budget for the party and decided to chug-a-lug what was left of the smooth, deadly vodka in one sitting. Months later, we decided not to dwell on just how much money we spent that one night in January 2010. Because the important thing was, we made history.
