Ellen's E-mail

My older siblings, James and Cass, stayed for two months after my mom's operation. When my mom regained her strength, we did what every family does every time a balikbayan comes home: We went to Tagaytay, SM Mall of Asia, and Bonifacio High Street, and we ate tuyo (dried fish) every morning, as per my sister's request.

I was so busy catching up with James and Cass that I hardly logged on to YM or checked my e-mails in those two months. When my siblings went back to the States and I returned to work after that much-needed vacation, my friends kept me busy by retelling the story of how I made a scene at the hospital, collapsed, and woke up on my mom's bed at the hospital.

That was how I missed it.

And of course, there was a terrifying backlog of work to be done at the office. So instead of watching more reruns of Veronica Mars or chatting with Jai and Sam, I found myself buried in digital campaigns, website mock-ups, banner ads, and viral videos that needed copy.

That was how I missed it.

I remember having the same dream for several nights in a row. Twice, I woke up before reaching the door, but there was this particular night when I woke up in a silent scream. I remember it vividly because I knocked down my favorite antique lamp shade that night.

It was the same dream. Only this time, I managed to get to the door before I woke up in a terrible scream that went unheard by everyone but me. In my dream, there was another Sam standing on the other side of the door. He was also wearing the same Ninoy Aquino shirt, the same pants, the same sneakers, and the same black ponytail. I looked from one Sam to another. They were both smiling.

And then I woke up sweating like a pig. Ana! I thought.

It was only then that I realized that I hadn't heard from Sam for nearly two months. I checked my phone, YM, and e-mails but there were no messages from him except for an e-mail from a girl who had the same surname.

I clicked on the e-mail from the girl named Ellen (Sam's surname deleted). The message was sent almost five days ago. That was how the devastating news hit me.

And that was how I almost missed it. I spent the next 24 hours in denial. I called Charlie over, and when the rest of my friends heard the news, they were as skeptical as I was when I first read Ellen's e-mail. But when Jai went to San Diego himself and then called us personally, my friends and I spent the entire weekend in vigil.

And when Monday came, I broke down again.
