Once. Twice. Thrice.

Once...a week.

This went on for a while...much to the disappointment of my female friends and to the wild hoots from the guys.

"It's the perfect setup, man!" One of my teammates said. "You get laid. No strings attached."

"If the sex is that good," another teammate said, "what's the problem?"

"You're the man!" Our team leader said after the race.

I knew that it was a practical setup. But they really don't get it, do they? I wanted more than just a physical relationship. Every time Summer would call me to "talk," I went through with it because I still loved her and I wanted to be with her. At first, I didn't care if it was just me who felt that way. I didn't bring the question into light. I embraced what we were doing with the same perspective I had when we were still together. I'm making love to her again, I thought. But for her, it was nothing more than just pure, unadulterated sex. I was, however, too blind to acknowledge it.

Regardless of her intent, she was back in my radar. And I wanted her back. I wanted all of her back. So I tried to court her again. I asked her out on dates again. We went back to that park in Makati again. I drove her home after work again. I did everything she wanted me to do just to win her back. Despite my closest friends' protests—including yours, which was, as far as I could remember, particularly brutal—I didn't falter. I didn't lose hope. And for a while, it actually felt like we were back to our old selves.

My hope and relief lasted only for a short while. I felt the same nagging confusion that someone else was trying to win her affections. That's when I decided to give her back the silver ring during the drive home from our Eastwood date one night.
