Falling Deeper And Deeper In Love...

When the second issue of Matt’s magazine hit the shelves, I was one of the first few people he called to break the news.
“Veronica! It’s out! Man, I can’t believe we pulled it off,” he raved over the phone. “Thank God, it’s over. The second issue at least. Hahaha.”
I was at North Park, with Dee and Claire, enjoying my bowl of Crystal Prawn Congee, when he called. I excused myself and rushed outside so we could talk without Dee and Claire glaring at me.
“Wow, that’s great!” I chirped happily, a big smile on my face for all the passersby to see. “I’ll grab a copy later, unless you want to give me a free copy. Haha.”
“Get one na din,” he replied enthusiastically. “I want to know what you think. But sure, I’ll give you a copy ulit when we meet, say Friday? Let’s have dinner.”
My stomach lurched—congee and prawns and all—my heart skipped a beat, and my lips twitched with so much excitement I had to squeeze my eyes shut for a moment. Then I remembered we have a company-sponsored dinner on Friday to celebrate the success of Booby Trap.
“Matt, I can’t. I have plans for Friday already,” I nearly groaned.
“A date?” Did I just hear a slight drop in his voice?
“Oh, no. No,” I hurriedly corrected him. “We have this company dinner at Bollywood, again, of all restaurants in Greenbelt, grabe. I fear it would last till midnight.”
“I see,” he said.
Just when I was thinking of a dozen possible excuses to skip work on Friday, Matt continued…
“Our schedules just don’t meet, huh?”
I sighed. “Sadly, yes.”
“Don’t worry,” he replied cheerfully. “Itutugma natin.”
And with those two words, I was soo gone.
