"You're home early," Sam said.

"Everyone has a date," I answered as I kicked my shoes, dropped my bag, and walked to the kitchenette for a glass of wine.

"And you don't?" Sam teased.

"Just this glass," I replied.

Sam was home alone because Ana had this retreat to go to. I guess it was my chance to talk to him about Ana's demand/request.

"Sam," I started. "Remember those conversations we had about you meeting your exes?"

"What about them?"

"Well...Ana talked to me about it."

"I told her it's nothing," Sam started. "It's just dinner. I explained it na 'di ba?"

"To you it's just dinner," I replied. "But girls think otherwise. For us, it's a totally different thing. For you, it's just dinner and talking. For us, it's dinner, talking, and rekindling old flames...probably...well, I mean, visions of sugar plums dance around our heads and we go gaga because, hey, my boyfriend is having dinner with the girl he used to—in the words of Charlie—exchange bodily fluids with. Believe me, it's different."

"But I just want to keep in touch," Sam defended himself. "You know, just talk and see what's going on in her life."

"That's why we have Facebook, YM, or e-mail, right?" I answered. "Come on, Sam. You know what I mean. You're too smart not to get it."

"My ex was cool with it," Sam said.

"Well, Ana's not. It makes her feel that she's not enough for you." There I said it.

"Then how come she never tells me so?"

"She doesn't have the guts."

Sam walked over to the counter. I handed him a glass of wine. We sipped in silence for a while.

"Are you telling me to stop seeing my exes?"

"Hell no," I said truthfully. "That's your style, not mine. I'm just telling you what girls, particularly your girlfriend, feel about it. If you want to keep in touch, there's technology. That's why we have it. But having dinner with them is another thing, and you know it."

"Why are you doing this?"

I thought about it. And I honestly didn't know how to skew my answer to make it a wee bit less smug. But it was no use.

"Ana knows you'll listen to me."

And he did.

After that, I thought I'd finally warm up to Ana because I helped fix one of her problems. As it turned out, it was only a matter of time before she went after the biggest threat in her eyes.
