Days became weeks; weeks became months; and months became a year. Our old office in the outskirts of Makati transferred to a more prestigious address parallel to Ayala Avenue. New faces came and went but Sam and I stayed in the company despite the stress and meager pay.

And just like back in college, there were people in the corporate arena who were nice in front of you but talked behind your back as if your boots, clothes, and your straight English were the only interesting things on the face of the planet.

It wasn’t the first time this happened to me. I carried a bull’s eye sign on my back during the last two years in college. Gossip wasn’t new in my vocabulary that I had developed an “I-don’t-care attitude” and highly combative aura. And some people never got my drift. They thought I was just being mean.

Sam stayed neutral. He was, after all, everyone’s favorite officemate. But during the late night chats, as per my request, he told me the names of people who were anything but genuine. He didn’t tell me what they said about me exactly. I didn’t want to hear it anyway because I didn’t care. I just wanted a list—a list of names, so I would know who to be genuinely nice to.

Even back then, I choose my own battles, provided I know who are true to me. If there’s one aspect of my personality that I am ultimately proud of even today, it’s this: I could never be “plastic."

There were times when I got really angry and murderous. The source of which was always the same. And just when my claws and fangs were about to pop out any moment, Sam would invite me downstairs for ice cream. One hot afternoon in this convenience store, we made the ultimate pact.

“Hindi ka ba talaga nabo-bother sa mga tsismis tungkol sa 'tin?” I asked as I settled down on the hard stool.

“Nope,” he said coolly. “Wala naman dapat ika-bother, 'di ba?”

“I know that,” I sighed. “But that never stopped them from talking.”

“Don’t tell me affected ka?”

“I try not to but sometimes those people get on my nerves,” I admitted. “I’m just scared that these gossips would affect us eventually.”

“Bakit, naaapektuhan ka na ba?” he asked.

“Hindi,” I answered truthfully. “Pero naiirita ako.”

“E 'di 'wag tayong ma-bother,” he said. “Let’s make a pact.”

“A pact?”

“Yeah, that we won’t get affected no matter what they say about us.” Sam said. “Here, there, anywhere. Wherever life may take us.”

“Game!”

“Ang maapektuhan pangit.”

And then I laughed.

“And don’t worry about them,” he added. “I’ll always have your back if you have mine.”

In the months that followed, we found ourselves having ice cream downstairs to chat the stress away. Sometimes, a few of my friends at the office would join us. Sometimes, it was just us. Since then, no matter what I heard inside and outside the office, I simply shrugged them off without getting fired up. Sam had my back. As long as I had Sam’s friendship, the rest of the world can run after me with knives and shotguns for all I care.
