Formal Dates

Summer was the only girl I introduced to my family. She was the only girl I brought to family affairs because I really felt that she was the one.
We never had "sex." No, I wouldn’t call it that. I thought of it more as an act of "making love" because whenever I took her into my arms, I never felt an ounce of lust, but an overwhelming and burning love for that petite and bright-eyed girl who smiled back at me.
Even though we worked together, I still asked her out on a "formal date" once every month. I wanted her to feel as if I was still courting her, even though we had been a couple for almost a year. I took her to fancy restaurants. We watched movies and musicals, and even visited museums. As much as it sounds like a page from a romance novel, I really did those things for her. I never kissed her during those once-a-month formal dates. Not even a soft peck on her cheek. I simply held her hand and touched her face. I wanted it to be romantic. I didn’t want to spoil it by filling my head with carnal thoughts.
I just knew in my heart that Summer was the one for me and that no one could ever take her place. And because I felt too much for her, we tried to have a baby. I wanted to settle down, and I wanted her to be the mother of my child. But the baby never came.
I was really frustrated then, but looking back, maybe it was God’s plan after all. Maybe God knew that the petite and bright-eyed girl whom I loved too much would only break my heart and leave me bleeding to death, whether I was here or abroad.
To be continued...
