Getting All Dressed Up...For What?

“So bakit ka nga naka-skirt?”
It’s been two weeks since I last saw Matt. Sometimes, I’m not sure if things changed between us—for the better or for the worse; I’m too scared to even think about it.
After that Wild Goose Chase in the South, the only change I noticed was my co-workers’ sudden interest in my Dress-Down-Friday attire. Even our very big, very single, and menopausal HR head joined in the teasing with her standard “Uy, may date s’ya...” said just loud enough to be heard by three departments.
“So, what’s with the skirt?” Dee, who’s been playing devil’s advocate since my alleged asthma attack in Greenbelt 3, asked me the same question for the nth time that Friday.
“Matt,” our junior copywriter, Claire, said without looking away from her computer screen and typing furiously.
“I asked ‘what’s with the skirt,’ not ‘what’s under the skirt,’” Dee replied while dipping the chamomile tea bag in her mug for emphasis.
“Grammatically speaking, it should be ‘who’s going to be under the skirt,’” Claire swiveled her chair to face Dee. “Or ‘who’s going to take off the…’”
“Come on guys!” I cut in. “It’s just dinner okay? It’s not even a date…I think.”
“So why are you putting lotion on your legs?” Claire, the devil’s second advocate, retorted.
“Yes, and that’s no ordinary lotion either,” Dee stopped to sip tea. “That’s Victoria’s Secret. I smell sex, don’t you Claire?”
“It’s cold, okay?” I threw the innocent lotion back to my cabinet. It landed with a thud. “My skin’s getting dry!”
My friends, who are now sporting identical evil smirks, retreated to the office pantry laughing. It was almost 7 o’clock and the office was quite deserted, except for the big boss who’s still barking orders over the phone. My throat suddenly felt dry, so I grabbed my Starbuck’s mug and went to the water station, or should I say the interrogation room, where Dee and Claire played bad cop and bad cop on me.
