With everything I brought with me, it would take me two days to get settled. My lips were probably turning blue from hunger because Sam decided we take a break. We went to the small L-shaped kitchenette that, amazingly, had a spacious countertop and three bar stools. I unpacked my Mom’s coffeemaker, stole Sam’s coffee, poured water, and settled comfortably on one of the stools as I waited for my coffee to brew and for Sam to finish cooking my favorite cheese omelet—gourmet style.

You see, Sam is a chef with his own restaurant two blocks from the condo. It never ceased to amaze me how he could whip up such a simple meal and make it sinfully tasty. What was in it anyway? It was just a mixture of eggs, salt, pepper, and cheese. Okay, so I didn’t know how to cook. Big deal.

“So what did your parents say?” he asked, his back to me as he poured the egg mixture onto the skillet.

“Nothing,” I answered as I fixed myself a cup of coffee. “You know my parents.”

“I see,” was all he said.

The egg mixture sizzled and Sam placed two slices of Kraft Singles on one side. Then, he flipped the other side to set the cheese in place.

“By the way, here are your keys,” he reached inside his pocket and retrieved a set of keys. He threw it on the table. I eyed it carefully. Spongebob Squarepants keychain?

“I don’t mind if you stay out all night,” he said while toying with my omelet in the pan. “That’s the whole point of trying to be independent anyway. But I’ll be here most of the time, after I close the restaurant that is. So...”

“So...?”

He flipped the omelet to the other side. “So, you have to bring your male suitors somewhere else,” he grinned. “I’m a light sleeper. I wake up to the slightest noise.”

I laughed. “Awww...don’t tell me you’re jealous!”

He flipped the omelet toward me, and it landed perfectly on my plate.

“Bitch,” he laughed. “Over my dead body.”

And with that, he sat next to me. We ate breakfast and sipped coffee as he chatted away. This was his side that only a few were accessible to. And that brought back memories of the day we first met, which was nearly four years ago.
