A few months after Chi joined Summit Media, she asked if I wanted to work freelance for Cosmo. I've been a fan of Cosmo since before I learned how to French kiss, so I said yes, yes, YES via Yahoo! Messenger. The following day, we met at McDonald's at El Pueblo for breakfast. She was carrying a stack of papers, three of which were copies of my contract as contributing writer for Cosmo.ph.

Chi had been urging me to jump ship for months. Even then, I knew that I was wasting my time in an unstable agency. I also hated the gossip culture and the crab mentality of a handful of people there.

"Insecure kasi sila sa mga taong may talent," Chi explained, referring to the behavior of two office bitches. "I worked in the agency for almost three years, remember? And I've seen their worst attitude. Kapag nakikita nila na you have the potential to go up, they will gossip about you to bring you down. Naku, how much more ikaw! When they find out that you write for Cosmo, lalo kang matsi-tsismis niyan!"

"Ha! I dare them to talk!" I challenged. "You know Ms. Ella of marketing, right?"

"Yup, friend ko siya."

"She became my mentor at the office, one of the few bosses whom I really look up to. She's helping me deal with those imbeciles. Teaches me a lot."

"That's great," Chi said. "Pero seriously, leave the agency and join Summit na kasi."

"Tempting, Chi, but I need to prove something at the agency pa e," I said earnestly. "Pero hold that offer, okay lang?"

That morning, almost a year ago, I signed a contributing writer and Bedroom Blogger contract under Cosmo.ph. It felt as if the universe was on my side because I found out that my Cosmo editor was a good friend of the editor of the magazine I also write for.

When I got home that day, a part of me felt that I should have grabbed the full time job offer, but a bigger part of me reasoned that there's a right time for everything. I slept with a wide grin on my face, thinking that I just turned down a job a million girls would kill for.
