How I Met Your Father

Even today, I still have mixed feelings for the whole Twilight Saga franchise. Logan and I left the cinema stunned into silence. On my end, I couldn't really say that it was Jacob's abs that made me shut up because it's the third movie installment—Eclipse—that featured the most half-naked men in denim shorts, in the most number of abs-abs-abs-mo-ay-nakakasilaw scenes. Seriously, I never really knew why I left the cinema with a "what-was-that-all-about?" look on my face. Months later, Logan would admit to me that he'd rather quit smoking than watch the third Twilight Saga movie with me.

And yet, no amount of sappy vampire movie could ruin the memory of the flirting exchange Logan and I shared inside the dark cinema. Testing my patience pala ha, I thought. Two can play that game!

The reality and normality of Robinsons Galleria began to thaw us, and we were just trying to decide on where to have dinner when my Mom called. I checked my watch—7:45PM.

"Do you want my room in EDSA Shangri-La?" my Mom asked. "Hanggang bukas pa 'to. Bring your friends."

And that was how it dawned on me that it was that time of the year again—my annual slumber party with my best friends since Sailor Moon days. During the time when I was still up to my eyeballs in infatuation with Le Asshole Matt, my friends and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza. Last year, we stayed at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel.

"Akin na lang, Mommy," I answered immediately. "I'll go get the girls."

"Okay," my mom replied. "Call me when you get here."

When the call ended, I explained to Logan my yearly must-do with my best friends. We were supposed to go to Chicago KTV after the movie, but Logan understood: friends come first. En route to my house, I called Nicia and Gail, who were (unbelievably) free to go with me that night. Logan insisted on driving us back to Ortigas.

It was the first time Logan visited my house and the first time he met my father who was waiting for me by the door. Introductions were made and thankfully, Logan didn't faint. My dogs—Cloee and Tokii—came rushing to Logan in full Shih Tzu-speed that my poor, uh, boy friend(?), didn't know what to do.

Just like the past several years, I went straight to my room to pack really quick. That meant bringing my Mom's gigantic maleta for a one-night stay at the EDSA Shangri-La. It was Saturday, so unlike years ago, I didn't have to bring something for work the following day. I threw in my necessities: accessories, journals, camera, two pairs of shoes, swimsuit (just in case), laptop, and other things that I didn't really need but, once again, packed anyway.

When I went down with my enormous luggage, my Dad was showing Logan his collection of Marvel Comics. A glass of iced tea and an empty dessert plate were resting on the coffee table. Did they really wait that long?

"Hindi na ako aalis," my Dad said when I made it to the living room. "Si Logan na raw ang maghahatid pauwi sa Mommy mo."

"Ah," I started. "Okay, sige. Alis na kami Dad. Kasama ko sina Nicia 'tsaka baby ni Gail."

Both of them stood up. "Nice meeting you ho," Logan said and shook my Dad's hand. "Alis na ho kami."

"Sige, ingat kayo."

Logan didn't say anything until we were nearing Katipunan.

"Whew," Logan said. "Hindi naman pala masyadong nakakatakot ang tatay mo."

"Bakit, na-wiwi ka ba sa kaba?"
I asked laughing. "Uy, that rhymes."

"Muntik na."

And then we laughed as we made our way to Ortigas Extension to pick up my two best friends.
