"Naka-maleta ka na naman?!"
Nicia exclaimed when she opened the door of Logan's car and slipped into the backseat. "Ako nga paper bag lang ang dala e! Hi Logan!"

Logan waved and smiled just as I said, "E bakit ba, madami akong dala e."

"Maleta Queen," my bitchy chinita friend replied. "Wait lang ha, bumili lang ng Pampers 'tong si Gail."

When Gail climbed into the backseat with her baby girl, I found it hard to believe that it had been a year since she was all manas and alarmingly insecure.

Remember the story of a five-months-pregnant Gail yelling at her boyfriend Dustin in Eastwood City that the security guards didn't have the heart to break the fight? Yeah, it had been a year since, and looking at her from the rearview mirror, even I couldn't believe that Rihanna was actually her baby; and by baby I meant a living, breathing, kicking infant whom she carried in her belly for nine months. Gail didn't even look like she went through the whole pregnancy thing. Where were the post-pregnancy bulges? I couldn't see them anywhere!

I called my Mom from the lobby and quickly, we made our way to her room on the 11th floor. The hotel's suite was just as I remembered from the many times my family stayed there.

Every year, my Mom's company organizes a week-long convention for local and international doctors. They usually hold these conventions at the top hotels in the city on the first week of December. That why I developed a fascination for interior design and architecture. Since I was 5, my family and I would pack our overnight bags and spend the night at whichever hotel the convention was being held in. When Cass and James left for the States, my Mom let me take over the hotel room on the last day of the event.

The mini bar was packed with large pastry boxes filled with gourmet cakes from the event. There were also two bottles of red wine and some crispy pretzels. We found my Mom sitting on the bed and switching channels.

"Naka-maleta ka na naman?" she asked when she saw me half carrying and half dragging her gigantic maleta along the carpeted floor. Logan was behind me carrying my friends' overnight bags and our bags of good eats.

"Wala akong malaking bag Ma e," I said as Nicia and Gail shared a quiet laugh.

My best friends walked ahead to give my mother a hug and exchange a few pleasantries with her. My mom fired quick inquiries about my best friends' relationship status as Rihanna bounced on her lap. All that time, Logan was half hidden by the bathroom door. I was unsure when to butt into the conversation; it was my Mom who broke the ice herself.

"Hijo, bakit ka nagtatago diyan sa CR?" my Mom asked.

It didn't occur to me that his reflection could be seen in the mirrors at the mini bar. Logan and I exchanged a quick mamaya-na-tayo-mag-panic look before I grabbed his hand and introduced him to my mother.
