I Miss You, Sam

“Ana’s birthday is coming up,” Sam said. “What do you think I should give her?”

That was Sam’s first statement when I arrived at the condo. Well, actually it was “Hey V! How are you?” followed by the question mentioned above.

“Do you think she’ll like bags?” Sam continued as he opened a bottle of red wine and poured us a glass each. “Or maybe shoes, all girls like shoes, right? How about makeup? Scarves? Books?”

But of course, Sam, all girls like shoes. I just hope you’ll find a pair of high heels that can withstand your girlfriend’s excess weight. A pair of metal heels, perhaps? Makeup? Sure, give her eye makeup in different shades of blue so she’ll look like a pig with BFAD’s “Tatak ng Pagkasuri” label. Scarves? Give her a silvery one, so she’ll look like packed bacon. Books? Three Little Pigs sounds perfect!

Of course, I didn’t say that.

“Why don’t you just throw her a party at the restaurant?” I offered as I sat down. “Maybe you can invite some of her friends, too.”

“Hey, that’s perfect!!” Sam exploded. “You’re really clever, Ronnie!”

And with that Sam grabbed a notepad and pen and started making a list of food he’ll serve at the party. He was so excited, and I was so tired. I walked to my room to finish my glass of wine.

“Veronica?”

“Yes?”

“Thanks a lot,” he said, looking like the Sam I remember.

“Sure, no problem.”

“And Veronica?”

“What?”

“I missed you.”

I simply nodded. And then I left him at the kitchenette with his wine, notepad, and pen. I went to my room, kicked my heels, and stretched my feet. I sipped my wine alone, lost in the bright lights of Katipunan Avenue.

“I miss you, too,” I whispered into the cold night.
