It's A Small World After All

Logan and I arrived at the venue sweaty and out of breath. Despite living in Quezon City, it was only then that I realized that I hardly go to SM North EDSA. And because our jobs make Logan and I regulars in the malls around Ortigas, we both had a hard time locating the venue. We were almost an hour late, and we found Lily, in all her pink and purple glory, silently fuming near the event's registration table. I was lining up a few of my tried-and-tested excuses when she saw Logan behind me. Her jaw dropped and her face contorted in sheer disbelief.
"I can't believe it!" Lily was shrieking and shaking and giggling as the three of us stood in line for the mini buffet. "After playing dodge ball with so many blind dates, you still ended up meeting 'yung i-se-set up ko sa 'yo!"
"Okay, so siya pala 'yung girl na sabi mong parang si Mulan?" Logan asked Lily as he handed me a plate.
"Wait, Mulan?" I repeated.
"E kasi 'di ba you're one of the boys," Lily explained as she helped herself to the nachos. "Parang si Mulan, 'yung sa Walt Disney."
"Haha, okay, but I'm not Chinese, parang dapat yata ikaw 'yun. Uy, thank you," I replied and thanked Logan for the paninis. "Wait lang, if Lily is half-Chinese and she's your cousin, ibig sabihin Chinese ka din?"
"One-fourth lang yata," Logan replied. "Or less. Why?"
"E bakit mukha kang Prince of Persia?" I asked bluntly. And let me just clear that I wasn't trying to be funny.
"Sino naman ako, si Princess Jasmine?" Lily asked laughing.
Logan is part-Chinese, part-Spaniard, and part-Filipino. I'd like to joke that he's a mixed breed, just like me! But with his thick eyebrows, fierce eyes, and mass of jet black curly hair that looks like they will stay for the rest of his life, Logan looks more Middle Eastern than Chinese and Spaniard combined.
The event went on smoothly. The three of us mingled with my colleagues in the publishing and blogging communities. After the event, I introduced Lily and Logan to Ms. O, a dear family friend and the present PR manager of a tech giant.
"Ronnie, remember the guy you introduced to me a few years back?" Ms. O whispered just as Logan and Lily began taking photos of the newly launched mobile unit. "Matthew-something-guy?"
"Oh, Matt," I replied a little louder than Ms. O's whisper.
"Yeah, that's it, Matt (surname deleted)," Ms. O said. "He was here earlier. He's writing freelance for this techie blog pala so my assistant invited him. He was looking for you."
"Me?"
"Yes, actually, I hardly remembered him so he had to remind me that you introduced us once back when I was still with [name of company deleted], and then he asked if you were coming tonight," Ms. O explained as we made our way around the venue. "Oh, what's wrong, are you two not friends anymore?"
"Not really," I admitted. "But the writers' pool here is very small, haha."
"You tell me," Ms. O nudged. "Speaking of writers, are you free next month? I have events lined up."
After I promised Ms. O that I would attend those events, she made her way to a group of PBA players that Lily was ogling a while ago. I found myself in the middle of a crowded cocktail area as Matt's name pounded in my ears. He was looking for you, Ms. O said. I wondered why.
From afar, I could see Logan scanning the entire event area, probably looking for me. It took him a while to find me in the crowd, even though his eyes have passed the direction where I was standing. Malabo kaya ang mata niya? I thought.
When Logan finally saw me, he smiled. I smiled, too, and walked to where he and Lily were busy taking photos. If I remember correctly, that was the first time I felt it. As soon as I was near him, Matt felt like a lifetime ago and everything felt good again.
