Jumpstarting A Career In Writing

It was my debut article as an entertainment blogger. Franco asked me to write a review for Avenue Q and even invited me to join their group of movie bloggers. It felt good to write again and put my thoughts into words.

And what difference the review made. One day, I got an email from an unfamiliar address. She commented on my post about Carla Guevara’s version of “There’s a Fine, Fine Line.” What started as an exchange of insights led to a freelance gig from the managing editor of one of the top publications in the country. What made it more fateful was the fact that K, my first-ever editor, was Matt’s old friend.

My first assignment led me to Davao, on an all-expense-paid tour sponsored by the Department of Tourism. For four days and three nights, our group—writers and editors from different publications—explored the vibrant city, tasted the local cuisine, engaged in extreme sports, and got pampered by the best hotels in Davao. I made new friends, learned new things, and brought home a new perspective when I returned to Manila.

My first published article gave me back the confidence I lost. Soon, I found myself writing regularly for the magazine, earning more and feeling way better than I have ever felt in a long time.

When I visited K’s office to get my paycheck, we went out for coffee. I decided to tell her that we have a common friend. It was the topic I’ve been sidestepping for a long time.

“Yeah, I know,” K said as we took our seats near the window at Starbucks QA. “Actually, I saw your page on Matt’s Multiply site. One click led to another and I landed on your Avenue Q review."

“Did you know that Matt used to write for me?” K asked.

“Actually, no.”

“Well, he worked as a contributing writer for almost a year,” K replied. “Until we decided to fire him.”

“Truancy?”

“More on his being unprofessional,” K answered. “Late submissions, cocky attitude, intrusion...”

“Intrusion?” the word sounded familiar. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, I forgot to tell you,” K started. “A few months ago, he sent me a private message asking me why I was commenting on your blog posts. He bluntly told me not to get friendly with you because I don’t even know you. The nerve, right?”

“He told you that?” I asked incredulously.

“Yes,” K said. “And when I told him he has no right to tell me who to befriend or not, he stopped talking to me, and we got delayed in closing the October issue because he didn’t submit the four articles assigned to him. I had to work while in flight just to get his darned articles finished."

“When I got back to the office, I gathered his unclaimed paychecks, placed them in an envelope, hung it on the gate, and texted him: You can grab your paychecks at the front gate. Pray it doesn’t rain.”

“Wow.” I was stunned at this girl’s guts.

“I know, right?” K continued as she sipped her grande cafe latte with quadruple shots of espresso.

“K, I’m sorry if he stopped talking to you because of me,” I said. “I’m sorry I ruined your friendship.”

She nearly gagged on her coffee.

“Ano ka ba!” she said. “Some friend he was. That guy isn’t normal. What kind of decent person would do that?"

“Besides,” K continued. “If I had to do it all over again, I will still befriend you.”

On that day, I just knew for a fact that K will always have my loyalty and friendship. When I got home, I knew just what I needed to do.
