Lending Him Serendipity

“Hey, sorry I’m late.”
He stood up as soon as he saw me hustle inside Starbucks Dela Rosa and helped me with the design books, a dozen files, and laptop I was carrying.
“It’s okay,” he said. He placed my things on the small wooden table and handed me my coffee. “Good thing your coffee didn’t get cold. Double cafe latte, right?”
“Right! Thanks Matt!” I replied as I plopped down on the sofa and stretched my legs. It was Wednesday and one hell of a day at the office. Matt phoned that he was in the area and he wanted to have coffee.
I studied him. He was wearing the standard T-shirt-jeans-sneakers ensemble. Despite always looking put-together, he seems to be looking more and more forlorn in the past weeks I’ve seen him. He had a five o'clock shadow on his face, his eye bags were noticeably darker, and his smile came and went even less now.
“Uunahan na kita, I don’t want to talk about work,” he leaned back on his seat.
“Okay, no problem,” I said. “By the way, here’s the movie I promised I’ll lend you.”
I reached for the small VCD case inside my bag—Serendipity, the 2001 rom-com starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.
“Uy finally!” he exclaimed. “I’ve been wanting to see this since you mentioned it over the phone. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this one, 2001 pa pala’ to.”
“Well, it’s never too late,” I smiled. “Warning lang, it’s a very cheesy film, but well, I’m a marshmallow so it made a believer out of me.”
“Believer of what?”
“Serendipity, higher power, fate, chances, and, well, love?”
He smiled. He flipped the cover and read the synopsis at the back.
After a while, he said, “I stopped believing in love a long time ago.”
Somewhere inside me, I felt something snap, but curiosity got the better of me.
