Losing And Finding Myself...

One week later, we went out again, this time to play bowling somewhere in the South. It was raining again. Why does it always rain whenever we meet?

The last time I bowled, I was still missing my two front teeth. I kept getting a gutter ball that contributed much to his amusement. I would have thrown a ball at his face, if only the damn thing wasn’t 12lbs heavy. My irritation quickly subsided when I saw how his face lit up with each turn. This was his turf, I thought. So I let him teach me how to play.

It was still early when I told him every inch of me was in pain. We left the bowling alley and decided to drive around the city, while the rain pounded away as though it would never stop. It was almost dark when he toured me around the village where he grew up, chatting away snippets from his childhood days.

The rain got heavier; visibility was almost zero, so we decided to park on one of the side streets until the rain would pass. We talked about college—the places, the people, the experience. We talked about the present—how demanding his work gets, how some models turn out to be total airheads, and how crazy it is to be the second head honcho in the publishing company. We talked about me.

“How’s law school?” he asked.

“I quit.”

“Really?” he asked. “I thought you wanted to be a lawyer.”

“I thought I wanted to be a lawyer,” I raised my hands in surrender. “I don’t know what I want to do with my life, Matt.”

“You have a Journalism degree don’t you?” He continued grilling me. “Why aren’t you writing?”

“I don’t know…”

I looked out the window. It’s still raining.

“I’m lost, Matt.”

At first I thought I was dreaming of it all. The sensation felt so light I barely felt it, and yet, it sent a chill right down my spine. When I looked down, he was holding my hand.

“So am I,” he said.

Right then and there, inside a very cold, very still Toyota Corolla, he kissed me for the first time.
