Matt, Didn't You Know, I'm Your Greatest Fan

“Sana naman you told me na lesbian issues pala ‘yung nasa cover. E ‘di sana hindi ako napagkamalang lesbian dun.”
We were on the phone that night, laughing. I told him about Big Burly Mac and how I bolted from the store in my high heels.
“You’re really funny, Veronica,” he said. “So, what do you think of the mag?”
Do you want an honest answer? I asked mentally. Honestly, it wasn’t what I was expecting. He was right when he ranted that the photographers should go to hell. The photo composition was awkward, some of the models were bland, the layout should be scrapped, etc., etc. Of course, I didn’t have the heart to tell Matt these things, so I kept them to myself. I didn’t want to rain on his parade.
“It’s okay,” I gave him a safe answer. “Though it could use a better layout, hehe.”
Despite the bad pictures and worse layout, he’s still the youngest editor I know, a job that’s both an honor and a challenge for a newbie his age. Even if I grew up in the industry, I couldn’t imagine myself haggling schedules and meeting deadlines that are impossible and suicidal.
Or it could simply be because he means so much to me that no stupid layout can change my mind.
“I’m really proud of you, Matt,” I said after a long while. “Congratulations on a great start to a colorful career.”
“Thanks, V,” he replied in a softer voice. He’s less agitated now, more relaxed, and probably tired from all the excitement of the day that passed. “Thanks for encouraging me when I was thinking of quitting. It really meant a lot to me. Most of my friends told me to just quit; you didn’t.”
“Of course I didn’t,” I told him. “The pressure is just part of the challenge. Why quit when you haven’t even begun?”
He let out a soft laugh and I could just picture him smiling and shaking his head at the same time, the way he always does when he’s relaxed. “Thank you for being there for me, Veronica.”
“Where else would I be?” I replied. “Didn’t you know that I’m your greatest fan?”
That night, I just knew for a fact that wherever life takes me, my loyalty and support will always be with him.
