Meet Jai--My Very Bold, Very Loud, And Very Gay New Friend

A whole week passed. Sam bought me another shoe rack. As more weeks passed, mornings with Sam became a routine.

It must be fun to have your own business. You don’t have to wake up early to clock in, and you can stay as late as you want without bothering to clock out. On most days, Sam would sleep in up to 9AM, so I had to cook breakfast for two (which was usually made up of fried eggs, bacon/meatloaf/sausage, and toast). But most of the time, I just gulp down a mug of coffee, grab a bagel, and go without waking him up.

My new job turned out to be challenging. I feel the familiar rush of the new conquest and the foreplay-like build up whenever a copy is approved and sent to production. And every time I see my work up there in billboards/commercials/print ads, I experience a massive intellectual orgasm. Yes, no kidding!

The advertising industry is like a bizarre tapestry of diverse personalities, that sometimes, it can be really hard to find your way into the clusters. I was lucky because I know someone already--Franco, who introduced me to his crowd. Soon, the new gang—Franco, Chi, Aki, me, and just recently, Jai (real name: Jose Antonio Policarprio Tamaso), the very bold, very loud, and very gay accounts manager—began hanging out during lunch, having drinks after work at Timog or Katipunan, and sometimes having dinner at Sam’s restaurant.

“Darling, are you sure you’re not lesbian?” was the first thing Jai asked me when I took them to Sam’s restaurant. Sam himself served us dinner. Too bad Aki wasn’t able to join us because she had to meet her boyfriend Strey for some serious Guitar Hero session.

“Jai, isa akong malaking kawalan sa kalalakihan kapag na-tibo ako,” I hollered back, and we all started laughing.

“E bakit hindi mo pa kasi patulan si Sam?” he asked again.

“Oo nga, Veronica,” Chi said. “He's such a catch. Tingnan mo, ang guwapo niya, mabait, magaling magluto, stable, has a nice smile, and friendly pa siya.”

“Thank you, manang Chi, that’s how you describe your crush in kindergarten,” Jai retorted. “Makinig ka, Veronica Matilda (surname deleted). Sam is HOT! Look at that body! Look at that face! Those biceps, sh*t, I’m getting horny here, pigilan n'yo ako. And okay, look at that wicked smile! And that hair, imagine pulling that every time…”

“Okay, this is getting disturbing,” I cut in as I sipped my martini.

“Come on, Veronica,” Jai pressed on. “Don’t you see what kind of creature you have, so close to your fingertips? Guwapo, 'di ba? Franco, 'di ba ang guwapo ni Sam?”

“Jai, straight ako, how am I supposed to answer that?” Franco replied.

“Chi?” Jai continued.

“Yeah, that’s what I’ve been telling her from day one,” Chi answered. “Bakit ba kasi ayaw mo sa kanya?”

“Wait, I never said that,” I said. “I mean, I never said I don’t like him. It’s just that I don’t feel any romantic inkling toward him.”

“Tibo ka nga,” Jai said as he raised his slightly hairy arms in the air in defeat. “Good thing friend kita, kundi aagawin ko 'yan. And since I still place my bet that you and Sam will hook up eventually, I’ll slash him off my radar. By the way, sino 'yung kalbo na nag-serve ng Martinis?"

“That’s Nino, Sam’s sous-chef,” I answered.

“He’s cute,” Jai replied dangerously.

That night, I introduced Nino to my new set of friends. That was also the night he started hiding at the stock room whenever Jai came with us to have dinner at the restaurant because Jai was always giving him hints that were anything but subtle.
