Men's Magazines Are For Women

After work that night, I declined my officemate’s invite for a quick drink at Greenbelt. I hailed a cab and went directly to Glorietta to get a copy of Matt’s magazine. Since it was a start-up publication, I had to go from one bookstore to another to find one that carries it. My last stop was Booksale.

I browsed through rack after rack of local and international publications and didn’t find a single copy of Matt’s magazine. A burly man with long, curly hair manned the cashier. His back was to me when I walked to the counter.

“Hi,” I said. “Do you have a copy of [name of publication deleted] magazine?”

“Yeah, we have that one. I’ll check ayt,” Big Mac said as he leafed through some magazines stacked neatly behind the counter.

“First issue?” he asked.

“Second issue, please,” I replied.

When he returned to the counter, he had this weird expression plastered all over his face.

“You sure?” he asked me curiously.

“Uh, yeah,” I answered as I handed him a crisp five hundred peso bill.

“Whatever you say,” he raised his big hands in the air and smiled smugly as he punched in a sale.

I didn’t understand why Big Burly Mac was so amused. I mean, it’s not unusual for a girl to buy and read men’s magazines these days, right?

“Here you go, Leslie.”

Leslie? All my questions were answered when I removed the magazine from the plastic bag. To my everlasting horror, the cover page showed three women in their skimpy bikinis, seductive poses, and lip-locking action, doing a fine good job of making everything inside it highly erotic. Did I mention that the cover also carried the word “lesbian” in screaming font you wouldn’t miss it even if you’re five feet away?

“Err, I know the editor,” I told Big Mac.

“Sure, miss, sure,” he said, the knowing smile never leaving his face.

I felt my cheeks grow hot. I bolted out of the store as fast as I could.
