“Hey Aldrich,” I called and waved my hand while running on heels. “Sorry, sorry, late ako. Grabe ang bagal nung taxi na nasakyan ko!”

“Relax Veronica,” said Aldrich, my common friend with Matt back in college, as he hurried to greet me at the entrance. “Nag-start na 'yung cocktails, tara let’s eat.”

We were at the press screening of a movie in Glorietta. My invite was a +1 deal, and since Gail and Nicia had different plans with their respective partners, I texted Aldrich to accompany me at the last minute.

“Sir Tan is here ah,” Aldrich told me as the waitress poured him a glass of iced tea. “He’s with Matt. I saw them earlier when I got here.”

My heart soared. “Really? Where are they now?”

“They’re probably talking to the Warner Bros. people,” he replied as we settled on a table near the registration booth. “You know, media people.”

I ate the chips without actually tasting anything. Matt is here. That was all I could think of. Aldrich kept talking about Sir Tan, our professor back in college, but I couldn’t make out the words.

And it was true. A few minutes later, Matt walked to our table with Sir Tan closely behind. He didn’t look too harassed with his button down black polo shirt, gray pants, and black shoes. His face looked clean and shaven, no more five o’clock shadow on his face. His strides meant business.

Uy pare!” Matt gave Aldrich a pat on the back. “Long time no see ah.”

When he looked at me, he gave me a shy smile and nodded.

I smiled back. What else could I have done?

”Sir!” Aldrich gave Sir Tan a long handshake. “It’s been a long while! This is Veronica, I believe she took your class in (name of university here) in third year?”

“Ah yes, Veronica,” my old professor extended his hand to me. “Of course I remember this feisty young lady. She’s the only one who dared to challenge my take on a topic about taxation, yes? She has a very criminal mind, this sharp little lady.”

I laughed wholeheartedly. Of course, I remember. I spent 30 minutes standing up in class, debating with my then professor about taxation being equal for all citizens. Sir Tan knew I wouldn’t stop being a smart ass. Soon, he shook his head and said, “Miss (my surname here), you have a very criminal mind. You should go to law school.”

Two years later, I did go to law school.

Ano'ng year mo na sa law school?” Sir Tan asked.

“I quit sir.”

O bakit?

I smiled wickedly. “I can’t use the word bullshit in affidavits e.”

We all laughed, including Matt who seemed to be acting out a part in a stage play titled “Socialite.”
