Moving In

“Hey forehead, I’m here.”

“Good morning to you too, Nose-y,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”

I smiled as I slipped my phone in the right-side pocket of my jeans. I was standing in the small lobby of Sam’s building bright and early on Monday morning. So maybe I looked like Elle Woods when she first moved into her freshman dorm in Harvard. No, I didn’t bring my Shih Tzu, and no, I wasn’t wearing pink, dear Lord. But behind me were three big suitcases, one balikbayan box, and the neatly packed skeletal base of my queen-size bed, plus the foam.

I was grateful that my Dad drove me to Sam’s building using the pick-up because my entourage wouldn’t fit in my Vios. I almost backed out when I realized I had to leave my precious V at home, a gift from my parents on my college graduation: Vios for Veronica—“a V for a V” as Sam often teased. Besides, with almost half my salary allotted for my half of the rent, I couldn’t afford to take the car everyday. My Mom didn’t come with us, but she made a kind gesture by letting me bring the coffee maker. She knew I’d die without caffeine.

My Dad was quiet during the drive to Katipunan. But before he left, he hugged me. I had to feign sneezing to keep my tears at bay. I didn’t want to breakdown, not when I was trying to act independent. “I’m sorry, Dad,” I said as I watched him drive away. “But I need to grow up.”

“Holy oblation! Did they disown you?” a familiar voice boomed from behind me.

I turned to see Sam in his usual getup—shirt, shorts, and slippers—scratching his head as he walked from one suitcase to another, trying his best to take a peek at what lay inside the gigantic balikbayan box.

“Not yet,” I laughed. “I’m hungry Sam. Feed me.”

The idiot didn’t feed me until we finished assembling my bed in my room inside his fifth floor condo unit. His place was smaller than I had calculated, or maybe it was because of my three enormous suitcases and the balikbayan box filled with more shoes than his collection of DVDs.

It was a two-bedroom unit, with a small living room area, a kitchenette, a laundry room, and...one bathroom. Eek. Good thing my room had top-to-ceiling windows that offered a great view of the Ateneo campus. The walls were painted a cheerful beige and the ceiling was lined with small yellow lights that cast a dreamy glow on the flowing maroon (ode to his Alma Mater) drapes. The place was tastefully handsome. He was, after all, an artist.

“Maybe we could, uh, put up another bathroom in the laundry area,” he started rather nervously. “But in the meantime, we have to share.”

I snorted.

“So don’t you fill the bathroom cabinet with your tubes and creams,” he continued. “I know you Veronica!”

I had to laugh. This was the reason why I chose to stay in his place. The idiot knew me so well, he made my mishaps sound too hilarious to be real.
