Moving Out

When I told my parents I was moving into Sam’s condo in Katipunan, two things happened simultaneously.

My mom, who’s usually hypertensive, gave me an alarmingly stoic face and called her menopausal BFF, Tita Lexie, and spent the rest of the day organizing a prayer meeting-slash-exorcism for my poor, lost, tarnished (and I imagine them thinking, “very liberated”) soul.

My dad, who’s the epitome of every male tantrum, locked himself in his study, where, I suspected, he called a dozen of his influential friends in the bureau to do a thorough background check on his youngest daughter’s condo-mate. No pun intended.

This non-hysterical, non-verbal, no-need-for-flying-china discussion may or may not be the result of two things:

a. They’ve always suspected that Sam and I are a couple.
b. They think Sam is gay.

So maybe announcing it over breakfast was a bad idea. We didn’t even get to the mango crepe dessert that our agitated helper, Ate Amelia, slaved over last night. I was left in the dining room to finish our breakfast of pork tocino and fried rice. Even the dogs stopped eating when my Dad’s fork hit the floor. They stared at me as if everything was my fault and ran to their room. The spoiled brats.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, part cloudy, part windy. “How appropriate,” I said to myself as I chewed on a piece of homemade tocino.

They didn’t stop me because they knew I wouldn’t listen anyway. As the youngest of three children, I was the appointed rebel kid because of my sharp mind and quick tongue--a deadly combination, so they say. Since my elder sister and brother left for abroad, I had been the only source of my parents’ disappointments, and in my dear parents’ eyes, moving into a “male” friend’s condo meant I have totally lost all sense of logic.

  31. I find this blog amusing and interesting. I came up with a list of 5 things why I don't want my girlfriend to move in: 1. I dont want pink and purple stuff in my bathroom; 2. I want to press the toothpaste tube anyway i like to; 3. No, i dont want my clothes in the closet color coordinated; 4. I hate milk, diet coke, tomato juice, and veggies in my fridge; 5. I dont want fights on who controls the remote. 5 dreaded consequences of having a gf move in. But damn, I got a single bed. It will always be fun.

  19. Your old enough to do what you want...But its important to inform them, and do what your hearts feel whether they like it or not hehehe...Eventually they will get used to it anyway they have no choice they will realized that you should live life on your own way to learn the lessons within.

  16. most parents will react same way or even worst than that, ofcourse so many thing will come across their minds, thinking that ur moving in with a guy....the kahihiyan and all the exagge things that they could imagine. hehe but as for me, you're on the right age, so explore, enjoy and learn by yourself.

  15. us filipinos are very conservative, especially the older generation. so it's really big news for them to find out their daughter is moving in with someone else. we are used to the tradition of being married first before moving in.

  12. maybe your parents are worried and get sad when you left since you are the only child who lives their house. mahirap kasi un nasanay na sial na nakikita ka nila, wven you are the black sheep of the family. they used to see you everyday. tapos biglang mawawala kasi mag momove out. i can relate this. kaso di ko tinuloy un pagboboarding house namin sa makati with may officemate. kasiayaw ng mom ko. mag uwian na lang daw ako.

  5. all parents are like that! di kasi nila kaya na mahihiwalay yung anak nila kahit pa sabihin na jan lang yun..I remember when I told my parents that I would need a boarding house para di ako mahirapan mag travel from work to our house lalo na sa gabi..nung una sobrang ayaw nila pero nung nakikita nila na sobrang nahihirapan ako, pumayaga din sila and I feel very independent at that time..

  2. maybe, V. what can we say, they're your parents. my folks freak out when i told them that i'll be moving to a condo by myself coz i want to be independent. they said harsh things and the worst of all, i'll let my guy sleep in. hahaha like you (errr.. not so sure if you'll go for it, though) i still moved out, coz i know that despite all the harsh things they said, they still love me no matter what. :)
