New Work, New Friends, Same Questions

It was Franco who told me about the opening in this big advertising agency where he worked as a graphic designer. And it was Franco whom I found standing in the spacious lobby and working his PSP to death while waiting for me that Monday morning.

When I met Franco at an event two years ago, I thought he was your average “laking Stateside” Pinoy. Regardless of the simple shirt and jeans get up, he looked like the type of guy who scores baskets during the day and scores with the ladies during the night. Franco and I shared the same penchant for RPGs (Role Playing Games in Play Station) and musicals (Avenue Q), and we soon became friends.

Soon, I became privy to his story that led me to realize that there was more to him than meets the eye—a certain past, a certain person, the certain reason he’s been single for the longest time. His story was fascinating, something you don’t usually hear about, and something that he writes about in his personal blog.

Two hours into my first day at work, I was swimming in brochures, research materials, client files, and articles that needed to be read, rewritten, and revised. When my employer found out that I can write and design at the same time, I was qualified for a dual position: copywriter and graphic designer. But the biggest bulk of my job requires me to write copies, defend them, and work with the graphic designers who put my words into action. I was told that I have very big shoes to fill, and I was up to the challenge.

Franco invited me to join his usual lunch crowd. We had lunch at the nearby pizzeria with Aki, the half-Japanese, half-Filipina game developer; Chi, the senior copywriter; and Franco, the graphic designer. Lunch talk turned into an interrogation when Franco let it slip that I was living with my male best friend. I had to answer the same questions.

“What’s Sam like?”

“Is he cute?”

“He cooks?!”

“He’s a chef? Wow! Lucky you!”

“Is he old?”

“He’s your hot best friend right? So you’re together? As in together together?

“No action yet?! Is he gay?”

The last one was from Franco this time, and when Chi asked me what it’s like to live with a guy who isn’t your partner, I told them about Rule #1.
