No Date On A Friday Night

“Okay, that’s it, I’m out of here,” I told Dee and Claire as I packed the last of the brochures we hauled from the mall to the building lobby and back to our office. “I’m pooped!”
“No date, V?” Claire asked, her hesitation mixing with curiosity.
“No,” I mouthed casually as I snapped my bag shut and waved goodbye.
From the corner of my eye, I saw that Dee was about to say something but decided against it. So before they could say or hit on anything else, I swiped my ID and waved goodbye.
“No date,” I told my reflection as I waited for the elevators to open. “No Matt.”
Despite the stress and my sour mood, it was a beautiful night. I checked my watch as I exited our building. “Hmm…eight o’ clock,” I murmured. Ayala Avenue was quite deserted by this time. It was Friday again; everyone’s in Greenbelt already, watching a movie or getting drunk.
I plugged my earphones and played the three-week-old playlist on my iPod. As the opening chords of MYMP’s "Power of Two" started playing, I started walking along my favorite avenue. I was emerging from the underpass in front of the Enterprise Tower when my phone beeped.
It was a text message from Matt. It read: “Hi V. Musta? Grabe, I’m so pissed off. People here in the office are pressuring me big time. I’m thinking of quitting na.”
Of course, it seemed as if nothing was even remotely fishy between us and that he didn’t ignore me (deliberately or not) for two weeks straight. All my confusion, irritation, and plans for murder evaporated into the chilly Makati air. Just like that. And since I’m too tamad to fire off a reply and because I’m on post-paid, I simply hit the dial button. He answered on the first ring.
