Nothing But Each Other's Outlet

“Maybe he’s just really busy,” Sam, my closest guy friend, said during one of my many phone calls in the middle of the night. “The guy’s not your boyfriend, V. Don’t expect him to check in every day. You’re not in a relationship.”

“But he kissed me!” I whined. “And he said he likes me, as in he really likes me.” I emphasized the word “really.”

“So?” Sam replied. “That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means something to me,” I fired back.

“You’re a girl,” my friend answered patiently, knowing that line would explain everything. “Of course it means something to you. He’s a guy. Even if he tells you that he likes you more than he likes his job, that doesn’t mean he would think of you every minute of the day.”

This is one of the reasons Sam and I are such good friends. He alone has the guts to tell bare facts straight to my face without a hint of hesitation. No sugar-coating of words; just bare facts; no bullshit.

“Maybe you both needed an outlet,” Sam philosophized. “You need an ego-booster, and well, maybe he does too.”

It was the most logical interpretation I’ve heard in the span of 24 hours after that call in front of Enterprise Tower in Ayala Avenue. In fact, it was the only interpretation I’ve been given because I never asked anyone except Sam, to whom I confide.

“He makes me happy, Sam,” I started. “Yes, he’s good for my ego, like the icing on my cake. But we know he’s still hung up on a girl, and I’m so chicken to ask where I stand in the whole picture. But he said he likes me. That should mean something, right? Something. Anything.

“So maybe for now, I’ll just get whatever I can,” I continued. “If it’s compassion he needs, I’ll be there. If it’s conversation, he knows how to reach me. I’ll just keep my emotions locked somewhere else, till I’m sure…”

“You really like this Matt guy, don’t you?” Sam asked.

“Yes…” I answered.

Sam sighed.

“Just be careful Veronica,” he said. “I’ve seen you get hurt and cry over guys. I just don’t want you to get your heart pounded, breaded, and fried again.”
